Term Limits Referendum
Why I’m Voting YES on Term Limits — and Why I Hope You Will Too
On November 25, the City Council of Berwyn unanimously approved a resolution that I wrote and formally proposed to place a term-limits referendum on the March 17 municipal election ballot.
This resolution came from months of research, drafting, and reflection about how we strengthen local democracy and ensure our city government remains accountable, responsive, and open to new leadership. With the Council’s approval, the decision now rests with Berwyn residents.
Here is the question voters will see on the ballot:
Shall the City of Berwyn, beginning with the term of office commencing after the effective date of certification of this referendum, limit the terms of the offices of Mayor, City Clerk, City Treasurer, and Alderperson to three (3) consecutive full terms, after which a person shall be ineligible to hold that same office until at least one full term has elapsed?
I am voting YES on this question, and I’m encouraging others to do the same, because I believe reasonable term limits are good for the long-term civic health of our community.
1️⃣
Term limits encourage accountability
When elected officials know their time in office is not unlimited, it reinforces the idea that public service is a responsibility — not a permanent position — and that leadership should remain connected to the people it serves.
2️⃣
Term limits create opportunities for new voices and ideas
Healthy democracies benefit from fresh perspectives. Term limits help ensure that residents from different backgrounds, generations, and experiences have a fair chance to step forward and serve our city.
3️⃣
Term limits strengthen trust in local government
By setting clear, predictable rules for leadership turnover, we help reduce cynicism and reinforce public confidence that our institutions exist to serve the community — not individuals.
This referendum applies prospectively and would not remove anyone from office mid-term. It simply asks whether Berwyn should establish a clear framework for leadership renewal moving forward.
On March 17, Berwyn voters get to weigh in directly. I hope you’ll join me in voting YES for term limits and for a stronger, more participatory local democracy.
